Gabe Cosen stepped to the door mat and she began closing the door.

“Selena, please…”

He placed a hand over hers on the interior knob.  She stilled.  And finally met his gaze.

“I know you don’t believe me.  But if you need me, I’m here.  I’ll help.”

She seemed about to say something but instead glanced behind her.

“He’s wrong,” Gabe said.  “I’m just trying to do my job.”

Her gaze snapped to his and he noted the sadness in her dark brown eyes.  Selena tugged her hand from beneath his.  “The job.  Always the job.”

What else did he have?  “I just wanted to tell you that I did not come here to cause gossip.”

“He just said what everyone thinks.”

“That include you?” he asked.

She frowned and tugged her hand from beneath his, then placed it on the door, ready to see his back.

“You returned the ring,” he reminded.

The flush colored her face and her eyes glittered dangerously as the door swung shut in his face.
